What Is Myopia?
Myopia, or short-sightedness, is a common eye condition that makes things far away seem blurry, whilst those close by can be seen more clearly. Although there is no cure for myopia, thanks to breakthrough lens advancements, the condition can be successfully managed throughout childhood, with specialised spectacle lenses clinically proven to slow the advance of childhood short-sightedness.
What Causes Myopia?
Myopia usually begins in childhood and can increase whilst they are still growing. This condition has been escalating over the last 50 years, with these contributing influences now being linked to it:
Genetics: Although myopia is more common in children with a myopic parent, this isn’t always the case. Studies have also shown that ethnicity may also be a factor.
Environment: The extended use of near work on smartphones, tablets and computers and the blue light these emit is likely playing a role.
Lack of natural light: Studies have shown that the natural light outdoors helps protect against myopia – a consideration with modern children staying indoors more than in the past
